Planning a home renovation? It’s one thing to dream about your new kitchen or bath—but it’s another to know what the process actually looks like. At AEM Construction & Restoration, we believe great results come from great communication. That starts with knowing what to expect.
Here’s a general week-by-week breakdown of what happens during a typical home renovation. Keep in mind: timelines vary depending on your project’s size, scope, and any surprises that pop up along the way.
Week 1: Demolition & Site Prep 🔨
The renovation kicks off with tearing out old materials—walls, flooring, cabinets, fixtures, etc. We’ll also:
- Secure the job site and protect nearby rooms
- Deliver dumpsters and equipment
- Address any necessary shutoffs (plumbing/electrical)
This is the loud, dusty phase—but it’s where transformation begins.
Week 2–3: Framing, Plumbing, & Electrical
With the space opened up, we install the structural and behind-the-wall systems:
- Framing new walls, beams, or room layouts
- Running electrical wiring and plumbing lines
- Setting up HVAC ductwork if needed
This is also when rough inspections happen to ensure everything meets code.
Week 4–5: Drywall, Insulation & Surfaces
Your renovation starts to look like a real room again:
- Insulation goes in (for energy efficiency and soundproofing)
- Drywall is hung, taped, and sanded
- Painting begins, or wall treatments like shiplap or tile are installed
Expect some dust during this phase, but visual progress is fast and exciting.
Week 6–7: Cabinets, Flooring, Tile & Trim
Now the space really starts to shine. During this phase, we install:
- Kitchen or bathroom cabinets
- Countertops (template + install may take 1–2 weeks)
- Tile backsplashes or showers
- Flooring (hardwood, LVP, or tile)
- Baseboards, crown molding, and other trim details
Everything is coming together—and your vision is finally visible.
Week 8+: Fixtures, Finishes & Final Touches ✨
We’re in the home stretch. Now we install:
- Lighting, plumbing fixtures, and appliances
- Hardware (pulls, knobs, towel bars, etc.)
- Final paint touch-ups and detailing
- Final inspections and cleanup
Once everything passes inspection, we walk through the space with you and review every detail.
Bonus: Custom Projects or Add-Ons
If your remodel includes custom woodwork, exterior upgrades, or specialty features (like a pet washing station or built-in seating), these may overlap the final phases or require an extra week or two.
